Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin announced the band’s forthcoming retirement as he shared their initial plans were to only release 12 albums amid the upcoming release of their 10th.
In an interview with Zale Lowe for Apple Music, Martin underscored the need for the band to limit their discography to 12 album releases.
Article continues after this advertisement“We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Yeah, I promise,” he said. “For some of our critics, even less would be even more! It’s really important that we have that limit,” emphasizing that “less is more.”

“There’s only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 and a half Beatles albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes. Also, having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we’re trying to improve,” he stated.
Article continues after this advertisementDespite the plan to limit their music, Martin said there will “likely be some side projects” with his bandmates Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion after they go separate ways.
Article continues after this advertisementThe 47-year-old musician declared that the band has “more joy than ever” at the moment, explaining that it’s “because of getting older, COVID, and everything going on in the world” that makes them realize how lucky they are.
Article continues after this advertisementIn 2021, the British singer-songwriter first opened up about the future of Coldplay, saying at the time that “they would release their final album in 2025” and would only “likely do a tour” rather than continue to create new material.
Coldplay is known for their hits “Viva La Vida,” “Yellow,” and “Fix You.” In January, the band performed for two nights in Bulacan.
